PRE-REQUISITES:
Either PE 1170, or good familiarity with single-step and triple-step swing footwork, leader-follower technique, and basic turns. You are going to want to practice at least once a week, but it will be worth it. Lots of fun, useful, challenging, showy, and pleasurable material!
What do students have to say about the course? Check it out.

JUMPSWING - some just call it Fast Lindy, Jumpswing is a subset of fast Lindy Hop 6 & 8 count moves, organzied as a complete syllabus for the average dancer. Dance, fast, dance now. It feels much better to fast music than triple step or single step east coast swing for most dancers.

SYLLABUS:

1. Fast Lindy Hop techniques - fast swing out style, etc.
2. Lifts, DIps, Jumps, Throws
3. Partnered Charlestons: more advanced and challenging moves.
4. Jumpswing: Tunnels, Ducks, Orbits, Pretzels, Reverses.
5. Movement: what it means to feel "grounded", "centered", how to do it, and exercises to develop it.
6. Footwork & Jazz variations: Sugarfoot variations, Scissors, Grapevine, Swivel, etc.)

7.
Connection: employing the muscle tone required to feel better about dancing together
8. Improvisation - can it be learned? can it be taught? Yes.

The current incarnation of PE1171 (fast Lindy technique re-mixed), is aimed at communicating the inner physical sense of momentum, balance, grounding, centering, RHYTHM, connection, feel, and all those ideas that are so vague and baffling to those who are clueless as to their meaning when instructors casually thrust such terms upon them. Based on experience with instructors of all abilities, and our own analysis, we continually explore effective exercises that communicate and develop the feel and joy of this fun and energetic dance.

Kurt's studies of Chinese Qigong under African-American master Maurice Haltom (www.mauricehaltom.com), exploring with him the profound and fascinating relation of ancient Chinese insights and applications of body-earth-sky energies to African Dance and Movement, have helped considerably in developing his current approach to movement for dancing. Yes, we will be doing some excercises to build body awareness. Lindy Hop is at its core a jazz dance with a partner. Creative rhythmic improvisation with all parts of the body can be taught, if one is open to learning. We take a strongly creative, evolving approach to instruction, and we LISTEN to our students!.

We support the Cornell Rooftop Mayhem Swing Club (a Jumpswing Club) and the Cornell Swing Dance Club (a traditional Lindy Hop Club).

SHOES:
You must bring, not wear, leather-soled shoes, OR sneakers with worn white (not black) soles. Neither? OK, dance in your socks, but it's harder to spin. You can't spin in basketball sneakers. We can't mess up the HN dance floor. Want dance shoes? Check the Home Page DANCE SHOE click.

WEATHER ALERT:

Make sure shoes/sneakers are dry before you walk onto any of our dance floors. The water really messes up our leather-soled dance shoes, and makes the floor dangerously slippery.

We leave you with one additional thought viz lead-follow connection:
"If you wish to connect well with others, you must connect well with yourself ."
2006 Addendum: "Um, good luck on that...."
